Lancaster Maternal Fetal Medicine (Lancaster MFM) is growing its medical team with the addition of maternal-fetal medicine specialists Jaimie L. Maines, MD, and James M. O’Brien, MD. Both are board-certified and highly respected MFM specialists that LMFM is honored to welcome to the family.
Founded in 2017, Lancaster MFM is an independent, physician-owned practice providing advanced prenatal imaging, consultation, and pregnancy care at its offices in Lancaster and Reading. The practice works collaboratively with obstetricians, midwives, and other healthcare providers to care for patients with both routine and high-risk pregnancies and also offers gyn pelvic imaging for women of all ages.
Dr. O’Brien joined the practice on Sept. 14, followed by Dr. Maines in October. Their arrival brings Lancaster MFM’s physician team to four physicians and three advanced practice providers and expands access to specialized prenatal imaging and maternal-fetal care across Lancaster and Berks counties. The practice serves the broader region of central Pennsylvania and routinely sees patients from York, Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon, Adams, and Chester counties as well as patients from Delaware and northern Maryland. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists, also known as perinatologists, are OB-GYNs with advanced training in complex and high-risk pregnancies.
“Welcoming Drs. Maines and O’Brien to our team marks an exciting milestone for Lancaster MFM that allows us to expand care for patients throughout the region,” stated Christian Macedonia, MD, co-founder of Lancaster MFM. “In response to growing demand for our services, we sought exceptional clinicians who embody our commitment to compassionate, patient-first care. Finding individuals of their caliber and shared vision was a high bar, and we are deeply honored to have them join us.”
Jaimie L. Maines, MD
Dr. Maines is a board-certified obstetrician and maternal-fetal medicine specialist with extensive experience caring for patients and families navigating high-risk and complex pregnancies. Her clinical interests include fetal anomalies and growth disorders; maternal medical conditions, such as diabetes, cardiac disease, and hypertensive disorders, and multiple gestations; and preconception counseling, prenatal genetic screening, and diagnostic testing.
A graduate of Penn State College of Medicine, Dr. Maines completed both her OB-GYN residency and maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She also served for three years as an OB-GYN in the U.S. Air Force before returning to Pennsylvania and academic medicine. Throughout her career, she has maintained a strong focus on medical education, mentorship, and improving communication with patients and families during vulnerable and uncertain moments.
Dr. Maines is a member of the medical team for Jack’s Basket, a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating babies with Down syndrome and supporting their families. In this role, she educates healthcare professionals on delivering unexpected diagnoses with compassion, empathy, and respect, while upholding each family’s unique values and choices.
“I am truly excited to join Lancaster Maternal Fetal Medicine and become part of this community,” said Dr. Maines. “Caring for patients during pregnancy is an incredible privilege, particularly when things become complicated or take an unexpected turn. I want my patients to know that I will be there to listen, answer their questions, celebrate with them, and support them through the difficult moments.“
James M. O’Brien, MD
Dr. O’Brien is board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine and provides comprehensive care for high-risk and complex pregnancies. His clinical expertise includes fetal echocardiography and placenta accreta spectrum disorders. He previously served as director of the Placenta Accreta Spectrum Program at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
Dr. O’Brien earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, completed his OB-GYN residency at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and completed his maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. A graduate of Gettysburg College, he has lived in central Pennsylvania for the past decade.
Medical education has been a major focus of Dr. O’Brien’s career. At Penn State, he served in several educational leadership positions, including associate director of the third-year OB-GYN clerkship, director of the fourth-year acting internship, and associate program director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship. He currently serves on the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s Fellowship Affairs committee, and as a national board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“Educating future physicians and paying forward the mentorship I have received are important responsibilities of being a physician,” said Dr. O’Brien. “I’m excited to bring my experience to Lancaster MFM and to care for patients and families in the central Pennsylvania community my family and I have called home for the past decade.“
