From Berks Sinfonietta
Berks Sinfonietta presents Conversations in C: The Triple Concerto on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m., at Atonement Lutheran Church in Wyomissing. The program centers on Ludwig van Beethoven’s celebrated Triple Concerto in C Major, featuring a trio of internationally recognized soloists: violinist Grace Park, cellist Noémie Raymond, and pianist Zhenni Li-Cohen.
The concert explores the expressive and collaborative possibilities of music written in the key of C, bringing together masterworks that span different eras and perspectives. Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, perhaps his least-played concerto, is one of the composer’s most innovative orchestral works, creating a compelling musical dialogue among three soloists and the orchestra that inspires the concert’s title.
Prior to the main performance, audiences are invited to enjoy a special pre-concert presentation by the Berks Camerata, a student string quartet. Showcasing the next generation of chamber musicians, the ensemble will perform selections from Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 in F Major (“American”), including the first movement, Allegro ma non troppo, and the fourth movement, Finale: Vivace ma non troppo; Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Major, first movement, Allegro ma non tanto; and Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, second movement, Assez vif. Très rythmé.
In addition to Beethoven’s masterpiece, the program includes Leopold Koželuch’s Sinfonia in C Major and Elfrida Andrée’s Andante quasi recitativo for string orchestra. Little known today, Koželuch achieved renown as a composer, pianist, and teacher, and succeeded Mozart as Hofmusik Compositor (composer) in Vienna in 1792. Swedish composer Elfrida Andree’s work as a performer and composer shattered many glass ceilings during her life, and her music is finally receiving the attention it deserves.
The inclusion of the student quartet performance reflects Berks Sinfonietta’s commitment not only to artistic excellence, but also to nurturing homegrown talent and fostering meaningful connections between young artists and the community.
