From Berks County District Attorney’s Office
On Saturday, May 3, at First Energy Stadium, the Berks County Medical Society, Berks County District Attorney’s Office, Reading Fightin’ Phils, SOS Berks, and Council on Chemical Abuse conducted their annual prescription drug take-back event.
During this three-hour event, participants drove up and turned in unwanted, unused, or expired medications for safe disposal. The first 5,000 participants received free tickets to a Reading Fightin’ Phils game, thanks to the Berks County Medical Society.
Detectives from the Berks County District Attorney’s Office oversaw the collection and control of the medications. These medications were later weighed and properly sealed for environmentally safe destruction.
A total of 385 pounds of medication were dropped off during this event. Of the total weight, 32 pounds were identified as controlled substances and 353 were non-controlled substances.
This year’s event surpassed last year’s 2024 total by 128 pounds.
Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. This event keeps our community and loved ones safe by discarding unwanted, unused, or old prescription medications.
Additionally, 30 medication drop boxes are located throughout Berks County at the local police departments. These boxes offer free disposal of unwanted, unused, or expired medication throughout the year to Berks County residents.
