The City of Reading is recognizing National Police Week and honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers in Reading and across the country.
As part of the observance, Reading City Hall, the Penn Street Bridge, and the Pagoda will be illuminated in blue this evening in recognition of National Police Week. In addition, today, May 15, is recognized nationally as Peace Officers Memorial Day. In honor of the occasion, the U.S. flag is being flown at half-staff on City of Reading properties.
Mayor Eddie Morán said National Police Week is an important time to recognize the work officers do every day to keep the community safe.
“We’re grateful for the dedication and service of the men and women of the Reading Police Department,” said Mayor Morán. “This week is about honoring those who continue to serve and remembering the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.”
Reading Police Chief Javier Ruiz said the week also serves as a reminder of the responsibility officers carry each day.
“It’s an honor to serve this community alongside the dedicated officers of the Reading Police Department,” said Chief Ruiz. “National Police Week gives us the opportunity to remember fallen officers and recognize the commitment of those who continue to serve our residents every day.”
National Police Week is observed annually across the United States to honor fallen law enforcement officers and recognize the service of officers nationwide.
