Completed in 1939, the William Penn Memorial Fire Tower is celebrating its 87th anniversary, and you’re invited to join us for a special day of history, exploration, and incredible views from one of Reading’s most recognizable landmarks.
Anniversary Tower Climbs & Grounds Exploration

Meet us at the summit of Mount Penn and experience The Tower for yourself!
Begin the celebration with local Skyline historians Corrie Crupi and Mike Reinert, who will bring the summit’s rich history to life. Together, they will explore the construction of the William Penn Memorial Fire Tower and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) era that carved this green sanctuary into the mountaintop. As you walk the forestry surrounding the site, you’ll discover remnants of the old Gravity Railroad, learn about the former Summit House hotel, and uncover the stories tucked away in this rustic, 1939-era setting.
Free Tower Climbs inside the historic William Penn Memorial Fire Tower will be open to the public. Waves of up to 20 climbers may have 20 minutes per climb session. Climb 156 steps to the top and take in the spectacular 60-mile panoramic view and the serene WPA- and CCC-era grounds.
Exclusive vintage-inspired Tower souvenirs and mountain merch will also be available for purchase.
Grounds Guidelines & Visitor Tips
Visitors are encouraged to relax and enjoy the scenic tower lawns!
- Seating & Picnics: Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets to relax at ground level. Picnics are welcomed!
- Leave No Trace: Although we have sturdy and reliable refuse receptacles for smaller gatherings, please practice “pack-in, pack-out” principles for larger items and carry out all trash to help keep the grounds clean and beautiful.
- Atmosphere: To maintain a serene environment for all guests, personal music devices and speakers are not permitted.
Introducing “Tower Sundays” & New Digital Resources
In celebration of this milestone, we are excited to roll out Tower Sundays! The landmark will open on a regular schedule every Sunday from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM throughout the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters annually through 2027.
