“Forever” opens with a phone call. Mitch McGlocklin’s life insurance application has been denied. Though a friendly human voice delivers the news, the decision was made by an algorithm that combed his medical records and social media accounts. Instead of viewing this act as an intrusion, he finds comfort in the ever-present algorithm continually archiving his life, even after it delivers a death sentence. “Forever” is filmed using a LiDAR unit developed for self-driving cars, a fitting technique to demonstrate the gap between human experiences and what technology is able to capture, interpret and convey.
