Into to Backpacking – Part 2, Pack Management

May 23 @ 9:00 am

In part 2 of this 3 part series, we will focus on another essential backpacking skill: how to properly pack and carry your gear for an overnight trip.

During this guided hike at Monocacy Reserve, Morgan will walk through how to calculate an ideal pack weight, how to distribute that weight for comfort and efficiency, and what you truly need in your pack for a successful overnight experience. We’ll also cover how to organize your gear so important items are within reach when you need them most.

As we move along the trail, we will discuss proper posture and body awareness when carrying a loaded pack, helping you move more efficiently and reduce strain over longer distances.

The hike will be a 4 mile loop, gaining approximately 685 feet in elevation. You are encouraged to bring your own pack, loaded or unloaded if you want hands-on practice adjusting, organizing, and carrying your gear. The hike will feel more challenging, but it offers a great opportunity to build strength, confidence, and experience on the trail.

This is Part 2 of a three-part Intro to Backpacking series. The final session will be a guided overnight experience on the Appalachian Trail, where participants will apply the skills learned throughout the series.
