The mid 19th century invention of the department store created a Paradise for Women. But first the modern city had to be created and built with the successful machines that we all take for granted now. Come and learn how the department store became such an important part of middle class – bourgeois Paris and then on to London and America. All of us have memories and experiences shopping in these “mercantile cathedrals”.

Wyomissing resident Gail Dawson-White will present the story of how and why shopping changed forever in the mid nineteenth century.
