Keystone Villa at Fleetwood in partnership with Berks History Center invites you to the retirement community located at 501 Hoch Road, Blandon, for a historical presentation on the 1927 Reading “Keys” Keystones baseball team on Wednesday, May 22 at 1 p.m.

1…2…3…strikes you’re out! Despite a hopeful beginning under the management of Fred Merkle, a 16-year veteran of major league baseball, the Reading Keys would remain a disappointment to the International League and fans. Guest speaker Brian Engelhardt, a local author and historian, shares a play-by-play account of the Keys 31-game losing streak and how Fred Merkle got fired (twice). His works include “Anything But a Bonehead: Fred Merkle’s Trials with the 1927 Reading Keys (Or: A 31 Game Losing Streak Can be Tough on Any Manager),” which appeared in the Historical Review of Berks County.
