Blueprint For Leadership (BFL) is a unique professional development program for individuals representing diverse and under-represented groups within our community. During a 6-week training program, participants learn the skills to effectively serve in voluntary leadership roles with local nonprofits.

The program was paused in 2020 due to the pandemic and resumed this year with 12 participants representing a broad range of backgrounds and employed by varied local companies and nonprofits. Individuals participated in a series of sessions focused on leadership, communication and nonprofit board governance taught by experts in those fields. Representatives of local nonprofits also met with the group to share detail around board and committee opportunities and responsibilities.

United Way created Blueprint for Leadership in 2013 and remains committed to ensuring the board leadership of our nonprofit sector is inclusive and represents the diverse groups within our community. The BFL experience provides the skills, resources and perspectives needed to assist organizations in improving performance and increasing their impact in the community.

Participants are selected for their professional experience, current community engagement and/or related goals, and demonstrated leadership ability. Participants are paired with mentors to provide support during the program and volunteer assignment.

“United Way believes our community is stronger when we welcome diverse perspectives and experiences. The Blueprint for Leadership program is important as we engage and value the talents of diverse individuals and groups within our county,” says Tammy White, President, United Way of Berks County. “Through this program, we help develop future community leaders and build more inclusive organizations – – making our community even stronger.”
