The Berks County District Attorney’s Victim/Witness Assistance Unit and Children’s Alliance Center are proud to announce their participation in the Red Sand Project on Thursday, July 30 (World Day Against Trafficking in Persons) from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., in front of the Berks County Services Center in Reading, PA. Red Sand Project is a participatory artwork installation dedicated to raising awareness about vulnerabilities that can lead to human trafficking, modern slavery, and exploitation.
Red Sand Project, founded in 2014 by artist and activist Molly Gochman, aims to raise awareness about vulnerabilities that can lead to human trafficking and exploitation. It tasks participants with pouring red sand in sidewalk cracks to symbolize structural inequities that can make someone vulnerable to exploitation. The sand reminds us of individuals who fall through the cracks of our social, economic, and political systems. It’s a powerful reminder that we can make a difference together, and those at risk of exploitation should never remain unseen.
This event aims to foster awareness and dialogue among community members about the issue of human trafficking and modern slavery, which affects over 50 million people worldwide. Red Sand Project has been conducted in all 50 states and over 70 countries, involving more than one million participants. Members of the North Carolina Eastern Regional Human Trafficking Task Force from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office and Outer Banks Hotline will be present to help share their current initiatives and answer questions regarding their efforts in our local community.
Participants of all ages are welcome, and materials will be provided on-site. Attendees are encouraged to share their experience on social media using the hashtag #RedSandProject, helping to spread the message further and create a global impact.
