For more than 25 years, the playground at Berkshire Heights served generations of children, Little League families, and neighborhood residents.
On Friday, Aug. 7, the Borough of Wyomissing will officially open a new chapter.
The Borough will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. to celebrate the completion of the Berkshire Heights Playground renovation — an important investment in safety, accessibility, and one of Wyomissing’s most heavily used neighborhood recreation spaces.
The former playground had reached the end of its useful life. Its aging equipment showed significant wear, several features no longer met current safety standards, and the play area was not accessible to children and families requiring ADA accommodations.
The completed project replaces that outdated facility with a safer, more accessible, and more welcoming place for the community to gather, play, and grow.
“This project is about much more than new playground equipment,” said Rick Weinhoffer, Wyomissing Borough Councilman. “Berkshire Heights deserved this investment, and Aug. 7 will be a day for the entire neighborhood to celebrate.”
The playground is located within the Berkshire Heights Little League Complex, which welcomes hundreds of young athletes, families, and visiting teams each year. Unlike other areas of the Borough, the Berkshire Heights neighborhood is surrounded by major roadways and commercial, industrial, and office development, making it difficult for children to safely walk or ride bicycles to other parks and playgrounds.
That made the need for a quality neighborhood playground especially important.
The renovation was supported by Pennsylvania’s Act 13 Marcellus Legacy Fund through the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program, awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. The project also reflects the Borough’s broader commitment to investing in parks and recreation facilities throughout the community.
The brief ceremony will include remarks from Borough officials, recognition of the Public Works employees and project partners who helped bring the renovation to completion, and the official ribbon cutting.
Invited guests include Borough Council President Kristen Gajewski, Councilman Rick Weinhoffer, Mayor Fred Levering, Interim Borough Manager Eden Ratliff, members of the Wyomissing Public Works Department, Pennsylvania State Senator Judy Schwank, and Pennsylvania State Representative Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz.
Councilman Weinhoffer has supported the project since its earliest stages and has remained a strong advocate for improvements at Berkshire Heights.
The most important guests, however, will be the children and families who will call the new playground their own.
Following the ribbon cutting, the playground will officially open to the community.
