Free, confidential service has connected local neighbors with essential resources since 2011
United Ways in Berks and Lancaster counties are proud to recognize the 15th anniversary of 211, the community’s connection to help and essential health and human services. Since United Way initiated its investment in the information and referral service in October 2011, 211 has helped residents across the communities find support during moments of uncertainty and crisis.
Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 211 is free, confidential and accessible in multiple languages. Trained resource navigators connect neighbors with local assistance for housing, utilities, food, health care, childcare, mental health services and more. Since its implementation, more than 411,000 Berks and Lancaster Countians have connected to 211.
“For 15 years, 211 has been more than a phone number; it has served as a lifeline, offering a path to help when our neighbors need it most,” says Tammy White, President, United Way of Berks County. “We are grateful to the donors, community partners and resource navigators whose commitment makes this vital service possible.”
United Way of Lancaster serves as the regional call center, which includes Berks. “Behind every call to 211 is a person seeking support, often during a challenging time. Our resource navigators listen with empathy, assess each caller’s needs and help connect them with services that can make a meaningful difference,” shares Patricia Espinosa-Vargas, Director PA 211 East.
“2-1-1 is also a useful planning tool,” explains Ashley Chambers, senior vice president, United Way of Berks County. “It provides a source of important community planning data by supplying real time information about the scope of issues local people are facing.” In addition, 211 is a contracted screening partner for the Berks Coalition to End Homelessness for those experiencing homelessness.
The statewide 211 program is led by United Way of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with local United Way’s, and with support from the state legislature through appropriation dollars for the statewide system. Residents can dial 211, text their ZIP code to 898211, or search online at pa211east.org to
connect with help. As United Way celebrates this milestone, it remains committed to ensuring every neighbor knows support is available.
