From Berks County Community Foundation
Berks County Community Foundation recently distributed seven grants totaling more than $415,000. Funding came from the Metropolitan Edison Sustainable Energy Fund of the Berks County Community Foundation and supported energy-efficiency projects. By replacing HVAC systems, converting to LED lighting, and introducing smart technology, these entities hope to save money on their utility bills long-term and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The following local organizations received funding from this year’s grantmaking cycle:
- $73,350 to Greater Easton Development Partnership
- $100,000 to Berks Catholic High School
- $56,545 to Our Town Foundation
- $76,360 to West Reading Borough
- $69,945 to York County Agricultural Society
- $9,000 to Reading Cable Company
- $30,473 to Valsage LLC
According to the PA Department of Environmental Protection, HVAC systems and lighting represent the two largest sources of electricity consumption in U.S. commercial buildings. By updating these sources, buildings can use up to 80% less energy (Lighting, n.d.).
The Metropolitan Edison Sustainable Energy Fund of Berks County Community Foundation was created to promote the development of sustainable and renewable energy programs and clean-air technologies on both a regional and statewide basis.
