Berks Encore Celebrates Annual Meals on Wheels Celebrity Day, seeks Celebrity Champions

Reading, PA—Berks Encore invites local community leaders to join us on Thursday, March 23 as we March for Meals through Berks County during our 12th Annual Meals on Wheels Celebrity Volunteer for a Day event.  The event encourages businesses, government officials, and other community members to participate in the Meals On Wheels program, a vital community service that provides meals to more than 600 homebound seniors in Berks County each weekday. This year’s Celebrity Volunteer for a Day event is sponsored by Tompkins VIST Bank.

For one day, local “celebrity champions” are asked to pack and deliver meals from one of Berks Encore’s Meals On Wheels sites:

The media is designated at Berks Encore-Reading at 40 N. 9th Street in Reading, and a live remote broadcast will air from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Murph & Casey in the Morning on The Big I 105 Country, WIOV-FM. WIOV radio personality Casey Allyn will be live on the air as she delivers meals in the city of Reading.

Without Meals on Wheels, many homebound seniors may not eat a nutritious meal.  Thanks to the Meals on Wheels volunteers, these seniors are guaranteed at least one well-balanced meal each weekday.  In addition, the volunteer may be the only person that the client sees in the course of the day.  Therefore the Meals on Wheels program is not just about the food; it’s also about providing a lifeline to these homebound individuals right here in our own neighborhoods to let them know that someone cares and that they are important—giving than “More than a Meal” each weekday.

Celebrity Day is part of Community Champions Week, which takes place during the nationwide Meals on Wheels America March for Meals event. Since 2002, Meals on Wheels America has led the March for Meals in an effort to fill the gap between the seniors served and those in need that is widening due to increased demand with a rapidly aging population combined with declining public and private resources, and rising food, transportation and operational costs. This March, hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs, like Berks Encore, will reach out to their communities to build the support that will enable them to deliver nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks to America’s seniors all year long.
