BK to RDG: Katie Merz

BK to RDG: Katie Merz

Location The Loft at 505 Penn Street

Date & Time Saturday July 21 from 6-11 p.m.

Pollen Consolidated and The Loft at 505 are thrilled to announce “BK to RDG”, a new series of pop up art exhibitions held in Reading, PA. These events will highlight the creative forces from outside our immediate region while recognizing our shared humanity. This first show will feature the works of Katie Merz from Brooklyn, NY. Katie Merz, a mural artist who was part of the production ‘This is Reading’, painted the rooming house, once called “Grand Hotel’, with her signature glyph patterns for all to enjoy along the well known Franklin Street corridor. It has become a point of admiration for all who pass by the mural.

Katie Merz works range from delicate line drawings to abstract paintings and sculpture and is influenced by Brooklyn, cartoons, architecture and the kinetic structure of things. Media has influenced the constantly changing surfaces that are worked upon. Synthetic, clear, moving and simple. No hierarchies are implied. Lines and respect for their changing integrity are what her practice is.

Her signature style, densely-packed glyph patterns creates complex, non-linear narratives that decode poems, texts and conversations with people passing by. Merz earned her BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. She has exhibited nationally including the Brooklyn Museum.

We will be presenting exciting art and an all vinyl mixing dj set by local (and via Brooklyn) dj’s Evolution and Greg Nyce, in an intimate, urban loft setting. A cash bar and tapas menu will be available to all attendees from the Reading Occasional Cocktail Club.
