New website offers advice and best practices for oral health in Berks County

READING, PA – A new website is providing oral health advice and best practices to parents, students, educators, and medical and dental professionals in Berks County.

Tip sheets, tool kits and videos are available at BrushUpBerks.com.

Many of the web pages and downloadable material are available in both English and Spanish.

The website is a project of the Berks County Task Force for Oral Health, which is comprised of more than 40 people across dozens of organizations and businesses.

“We encourage everyone in Berks County to look at the website to see if their oral health habits and their children’s or grandchildren’s oral health routines are adequate,” said Monica Reyes, Health and Human Services Program Officer at Berks County Community Foundation.

The material at BrushUpBerks.com will be updated periodically.

“We plan to regularly remind Berks County to take a look at the website and brush up on their knowledge, particularly at times of the year that pose challenges for oral health, such as Halloween and other holidays associated with candy and sugar,” said Reyes, administrator of the task force.

The task force held its first meeting in the spring of 2014 at Berks County Community Foundation to address oral health, one of the priorities identified in the 2013 Berks County Health Needs Assessment.

The task force includes physicians, dentists, hospital and medical center administrators, dental hygienists, school nurses, and representatives of a variety of community organizations and businesses. It has embarked on several successful initiatives, such as the Mission of Mercy, or MOM-n-PA, event in May that provided free dental care to 1,904 patients over two days in a makeshift clinic on the floor of the Santander Arena.
