Berks Opera Company, Yocum Institute present Hansel and Gretel, a Fairy Tale Opera

Berks Opera Company, in partnership with Yocum Institute for Arts Education, will present Hansel and Gretel, a Fairy Tale Opera by Engelbert Humperdinck, based on the classic Grimm brothers’ story.

Two poor children are sent by their mother into a haunted forest to look for food. Nightfall finds them hopelessly lost, hungry and terrified. In the morning, they stumble upon a delicious gingerbread cottage made of sweets. However, the cottage belongs to a dreadful witch, as they learn when they begin to eat it. Just as she is about to bake Hansel and Gretel into gingerbread children in her giant oven, they turn the tables, baking her instead…

Appropriate for children of all ages, Hansel and Gretel is a delightful mixture of folk tunes, moving hymns and sophisticated romantic harmony, including the familiar Evening Prayer. This will be a fully staged production with sets, costumes, props, lighting and makeup, lasting about one hour, in English.

Performances are Saturday September 28th, at 2pm and 7pm and Sunday September 29th, at 2pm at the Yocum Institute for Arts Education, 3000 Penn Avenue, West Lawn, PA 19609.
