American Creed Community Conversations

American Creed Community Conversations

The Wyomissing Public Library, in partnership with Berks Unity Coalition, is hosting a Community Conversation about the issues discussed in the PBS documentary, “American Creed,” on Wednesday, October 30th and Wednesday, November 6th, at 7 PM. The Conversations will be facilitated by Michelle Mart, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History at Penn State Berks.

In the documentary film, former US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David Kennedy come together from different points of view to investigate the idea of a unifying American creed. Their spirited inquiry frames the stories of citizen-activists who are striving to realize their own visions of America’s promise across deepening divides.

Using film clips of individuals across the country who have engaged their communities in various situations, the Conversation on October 30th will focus on politics and creed; on November 6th it will center on economics and diversity. The American Creed Community Conversations mirror the type of conversation Rice and Kennedy have in

the film, one designed to engage us in reflection and dialogue about our own part in the American story and how we shape it for the better.

Both programs are free and open to the public. People are encouraged to arrive at 6:45 pm both evenings; each program will last for 90 minutes. Light refreshments will be available. Registration is requested, and may be done online at www.wyopublib.org, by phone at 610-374-2385, or in person at the circulation desk.

American Creed Community Conversations are supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with the American Library Association, Citizen Film, Facing History and Ourselves, and the National Writing Project.
