Reading, PA – Free and open to the public, a multi-media 40th anniversary Leo Camp presentation on “The Nightingale’s Sonata: The Musical Odyssey of Lea Luboshutz” will be offered by the Jewish Federation of Reading in partnership with Literatour Berks, and hosted by Albright College, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the college’s Wachovia Theatre.
Roughly one year after the shooting at the synagogue in Pittsburgh, Albright College will host a lecture by Thomas Wolf about his grandmother — renowned violinist Lea Luboshutz, and her perseverance living in the Russian Empire. A performance of Cesar Franck’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano” will be played throughout the lecture, by violinist Ray Ushikubo and pianist Wei Luo, of the Curtis Institute.
Thomas Wolf is a renowned author of trade books such as “The Nightingale’s Sonata,” “Musical Gifts” and textbook “Managing a Nonprofit Organization.” He has published several pieces of research, including a study of the psychology of sight reading. Wolf has produced over 1,000 concerts with the Bay Chamber Concerts, and has toured with his uncle, the renowned Boris Goldovsky and the Philadelphia Orchestra as a flute soloist.
The Leo Camp lecture series was established on Albright College’s campus by the Jewish Federation of Reading 40 years ago. It is held in honor of Camp’s humanitarian, business and community work.
A U.S. Veteran, Dachau survivor and a businessman, Camp was an intelligence officer during World War II and participated in the Normandy invasion. He moved to Reading, Pa., to join the firm of Camp and McInnes, founded by his brother Erwin. Later, he founded the Jewish Community Council to help educate and foster a better understanding of Judaism.
The Jewish Federation of Reading is the planning, coordinating, and fundraising arm of the local Jewish community. The federation raises and allocates funds in support of many vital national and international Jewish organizations. The organization also publishes Jewish media, hosts leadership programs and trips to Israel.
