Alvernia University has received a “Voter Friendly Campus” distinction for 2021-2022 from Fair Election Center’s Campus Vote Project and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. Alvernia is one of over 200 campuses in 37 states and Washington, D.C. to receive this distinction.
“Guided by our University Mission to ‘foster the development of reflective professionals and engaged citizens,’ we are committed to ongoing efforts focused on voter education and registration,” said Dean of Students Karolina Dreher. “We are honored to be recognized for those efforts by receiving this distinction.”
The mission of the Voter Friendly Campus designation is to bolster efforts that help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process. Alvernia was evaluated based on a campus plan that involved education and registration efforts, the facilitation of voter engagement efforts on campus, and a final analysis of all efforts in the face of the upheaval caused by the global pandemic.
In the last year, Alvernia has spearheaded several initiatives to increase voter registration on campus and educate students on the various aspects of the process. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, a campuswide “100 for the 100th” campaign sought to achieve 100% voter registration across campus. In addition, Alvernia’s Veterans Center planned several initiatives in conjunction with Constitution Day and National Voter’s Day, including #TheVernVotes, to bring educational resources about voter registration to students and encouraged them to exercise their right to vote.
