UPDATE: The Code Red Ordinance for the City of Reading has been extended until Wednesday, June 30 at 8 PM.
With a sustained heat index of 96 degrees or more over the next two days, The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) is enacting the Code Red Ordinance for the City of Reading starting today, Monday, June 28 at 11 AM until June 29 at 8 PM.
In accordance with Bill #22, an amendment added to the City Code, Chapter 141, Part 2 Animals, Section 205 Caring for Animals in 2015, any person who owns, possesses, or has custody of a dog must bring the animal inside their residence for the duration of the code, except for supervised and necessary bathroom breaks and exercise. Additionally, non-compliance can result in the animal being removed by an Animal Control Officer from the property and impounded at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.
Owners will have 48 hours after the code has been lifted to pick up their animal and will be subject to applicable boarding fees.
“High temperatures and humidity can cause animals to overheat, which can lead to serious health complications,” said Dr. Jason Banning, Medical Director at the ARL.
Any person witnessing an unsupervised dog left outside in the elements within the City of Reading should call the Animal Rescue League of Berks County at 610-373-8830.

Con un índice de calor sostenido de 96 grados o más durante los próximos dos días, el Animal Rescue League de Berks County (ARL) ha activado la Ordenanza del Código Rojo para la Ciudad de Reading a partir de hoy, lunes 28 de junio a las 11:00 a. m. hasta el 29 de junio a las 8:00 p. m.
De acuerdo con el Proyecto de Ley # 22, una enmienda agregada al Código de la Ciudad, Capítulo 141, Parte 2 Animales, Sección 205 Cuidado de animales en 2015, cualquier persona que posea, tenga la custodia de un perro debe traer al animal dentro de su residencia durante la vigencia del código, con excepción de los ejercicio supervisados y salidas necesarias para ir al baño.
