Berks County Parks Hosting Two Snowshoeing Programs in February

Colder weather often signals a time to retreat to the indoors and take comfort in the warmth of blankets and cozy sweaters. But for those willing to dress warm and get outside, a world of winter outdoor recreation awaits! Try snowshoeing for the first time, or for those seasoned individuals, bring your own gear and come out for some fun with others in two different programs geared toward snowy snowshoe strolls.

February’s ‘ snow moon’ arrives just two days after Valentine’s Day, making it the perfect opportunity for couples interested in a moonlit snowshoe walk. The Snowshoe With Your Sweetheart program on Wednesday, February 16 is for couples of all ages to learn the basics of snowshoeing. The evening includes a walk around the(hopefully) snow-filled fields of the Heritage Center and a warm cup of hot chocolate and homemade cookies from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Learn the do’s and don’ts of snowshoeing during the two-hour Snowshoeing 101 program on Saturday, February 19, starting at 10 a.m. This introductory program is a great way for beginners to get a taste of this fun and accessible recreational activity before deciding if it’s right for them. Participants will learn the basics of snowshoeing and then strap on a pair of snowshoes and enjoy a hike around the fields and hills of the Heritage Center. This program is designed for adults and children ages 6 and older, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Both programs are offered for FREE to registered participants. A limited amount of gear will be available to borrow for both events and must be reserved when registering. Snowshoes can also be rented in advance from Buckman’s Ski Shop in Muhlenberg. If there is no snow, participants will hike along the Union Canal trail instead. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes or other appropriate footwear and dress accordingly. A snow date will be announced if inclement weather prohibits a safe program. Registration is required before February 14. Please email [email protected] or call 610-374-2944, ext. 2611 to register or for more information.

This program is presented by the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department.
