Wyomissing Public Library Hosting Black History Month Events

The Wyomissing Public Library has scheduled several programs, in-person and online, in recognition of Black History Month.

On Tuesday, February 15th at 6 PM, there will be an online discussion via Zoom about Richard Wright’s novel, Native Son, the story of 20-year-old Bigger Thomas, a black youth living in utter poverty in a poor area on Chicago’s South Side in the 1930s.

The national theme of this year’s Black History Month is Health and Wellness in the Black Community. In keeping with that theme, Dennis Williams, Health & Wellness Chair for the Reading Branch, NAACP, and Rebecca Reppert, a member of the local chapter, will present an in-person program on Saturday, February 19th at 1 PM  about our local Black community and health and wellness.

The novel, Passing, by Nella Larsen, written in 1929, and the film of the same name, directed by Rebecca Hall, released last year and currently streaming on Netflix, will be the subject of a Zoom discussion on Tuesday, February 21st at 6 PM. The novel and the film tell the story of two friends who reunite in the 1920’s in Harlem.

On Saturday, February 26th at 1 PM, the library will, in partnership with Bullfrog Communities, present the film, “The Power to Heal,” the untold story of how the twin struggles for racial justice and healthcare intersected: creating Medicare and desegregating thousands of hospitals at the same time. Discussion will follow the film.

All the programs are free and open to the public; masks are required for in-person programs at the library, 9 Reading Boulevard in Wyomissing. Registration is requested for in-person programs and required for online discussions. Email [email protected] or call the library at 610-374-2385 or register at the front desk.
