Police Announce Traffic Modifications to Accommodate Friday’s Downtown Events

The Reading Police Department Traffic Division is releasing the following temporary traffic modifications to accommodate various events occurring in the City on Friday, April 1st.

Reading will be busy with events this Friday, and Reading Police would like to ease traffic to support the Moran Administration’s commitment to creating a vibrant and diverse #DowntownRDG. Events include the kick-off of the 31st Berks Jazz Fest, which is happening at various venues throughout the city, and the City of Reading’s Downtown First Friday Block Party, happening on the 400 block of Penn Street from 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm.

Due to the popularity of these events, the detailed traffic plan below will ease traffic congestion, and the suggested routes will allow participants and visitors better access to parking and allow for efficient travel throughout the city.

Beginning on Friday at 1 pm, the 400 block of Penn Street will be closed in both directions (eastbound and westbound) with barricades set up at 4th & 5th streets and will remain closed until the First Friday Block Party is over.

For anyone attending a special event in the city and entering via the Penn Street Bridge (US-422); use the modified routes suggested for each venue below:

These modifications will be effective from approximately 1 pm to 10 pm Friday, April 1st. In addition, Reading Police officers will be assigned to affected intersections and other strategic areas. Detour signage, ‘No Parking’ signs, and additional notices will be posted throughout the routes to assist drivers.

Alvernia University’s shuttle bus will also utilize Court St for their drop-off and pick-up rotations during the closure of the 400 block of Penn St.

“The Police Traffic Division wants to ensure participants and spectators have a safe and enjoyable time in the City at these great events, which includes providing easy traffic access into the City and accessible parking near the venues.”
