About 4,000 Reading School District K-12 students made honor roll in the 3rd quarter during the 2022-23 school year. To celebrate their achievements, Berks Community Action Program (BCAP) teamed up with the Great American Creamery, The Plug shoe store, and students from Albright College to host Ice Cream Honor Roll socials for students across the school district.

BCAP traveled to Southwest Middle School, Millmont Elementary, Amanda Stout Elementary, and Tyson-Schoener Elementary schools to greet honor roll students for ice cream, courtesy of the Great American Creamery. They also held surprise raffles to gift one child from each school a new pair of sneakers, courtesy of Tyler Simmons, owner of The Plug.

“We started #HonorRollGiveAway as an incentive for “R” youth to go above and beyond in the classroom and in life,” Simmons said.

“This is our way to show appreciation to those that are continuing to give their all despite everything going on around them,” Stephan Fains, Director of Community Engagement, said. “This is one of the steps we’re taking to celebrate kids in the community.”

“We are encouraging kids to do and be their best, and making a big deal of celebrating their accomplishments,” English Bradley, board member for BCAP, said. “These ice cream socials reinforce positive behavior, and give the kids something to look forward to. It’s also really great to see community partners come together to make it happen. Plus, the kids are super cute.”

The initiative, done through BCAP’s T.E.E.N.S. (Take. Each and EVERY. Necessary. Step.) program, was made possible by a Violence Intervention and Prevention grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD).

5,000 RSD students are projected to make honor roll by the end of the school year.
