The Berks History Center (BHC) is excited to announce the appointment of Susan Atkins Weiser as its new board president, effective June 22, 2023. Susan succeeds Floyd N. Turner, II, who has served as president since 2020.
“Floyd Turner’s tenure as board president of the BHC has been marked by unwavering dedication and exceptional leadership. His visionary guidance has propelled BHC’s mission forward, leaving an enduring impact on preserving and promoting our rich local heritage,” said BHC Executive Director, Benjamin Neely. “As we bid Floyd farewell, we eagerly anticipate Susan Weiser’s succession, confident that her passion for history and proven commitment to community engagement will further elevate our mission and inspire future generations.”
Susan is a retired business owner of a second generation business. Her father, Carthell Atkins, opened C.B. Atkins Real Estate and Appraisals in Shillington, Pa. in 1961. Susan, a graduate of the Governor Mifflin School District, joined her father’s business in 1985 and received further education resulting in a broker license and designated certified appraiser license. She served as owner from 1990 until her retirement in 2014. Her areas of responsibility included working with buyers and sellers, managing an office staff, and mentoring several apprentice appraisers until certification. Additionally, she served as a certified appraiser affiliated with many lending institutions, attorneys, relocation companies, and private clients.
In addition to her new role as BHC’s board president, Susan has served on the board of several non-profits including the Reading Symphony Orchestra and Friends of Chamber Music of Reading. Currently, she is the vice president of Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom, docent and life member of the John Updike Childhood Home, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a contributor to the Historical Review of Berks County magazine produced by BHC.
“As one whose life has been shaped by a love of history and volunteerism, I can think of no better institution to serve than the Berks History Center. I am beyond grateful to the board for entrusting me with this extraordinary opportunity,” said Weiser. “I look forward to serving alongside an exceptionally qualified Executive Director and staff. This is certainly an exciting time as we move forward with changes, renovations, and improvements to enhance BHC’s grounds, Historical Society Museum and the Henry Janssen Library.”
Other board changes included naming Corrie Crupi-Zana as Vice President. BHC also welcomed seven new members to its board: Tadd Casner, Bruce Cohen, Amanda Funk, Hassan Gourama, Richard Partsch, Frederick Sheeler, and Stephen Yarnell.
