Students will tour local murals and participate in painting one.

On Thursday, Aug. 10, the third entering class of Drexel University College of Medicine at Tower Health’s MD program followed in the footsteps of their classmates. As part of their orientation to their medical school and community, they painted a mural that now displays at 11th and Richmond Streets in Reading.

Prior to painting, medical students took a walking tour through West Reading with local artist Michael Miller to learn more about his connection to public art and the collection of murals that have been created in West Reading and the Greater Reading community.

Back at campus, they painted a portion of a mural sponsored by SOS Berks and designed by Reading artist Marian Njai.

The SOS Berks Opioid Coalition created a series of recovery-themed murals to reduce stigma. The theme, “Addiction Doesn’t Define Anyone” is intended to provide hope for those struggling with substance use disorder, while also putting a human face on addiction. Ms. Njai’s mural design is based on the recovery story of Yvonne Stroman, who discussed the many joys of life in recovery, which includes bicycling, journaling, helping others in recovery and mentoring young people.

This activity took place as part of the medical students’ orientation week to introduce them to the community that they will not only live in, but also serve for the next four years on their path to becoming physicians.

“The Berks County community has welcomed our students with open arms,” said Karen Restifo, MD, JD, regional vice dean, Drexel University College of Medicine at Tower Health. “The medical students are now a part of our community. They have a lasting impact on the lives of patients they help care for and the mural is just another way for them to make their mark in Berks County.”

Sue Perrotty, Tower Health president and CEO noted, “We are thrilled to welcome the third class of students to our Tower Health family. The education of tomorrow’s health care providers is one of our top priorities at the health system and this year’s class brings together individuals with different backgrounds and experiences that will enhance their learning experience.”
