On Sunday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m., members of Bern Evangelical Lutheran Church, 820 W. Leesport Road, Leesport, will be celebrating their 25th anniversary with a special anniversary worship service with Pastor Kenneth Gould and Pastor William Fryer leading the worship service. Special music by previous church organists and well-known trumpeter Dave Stahl will be performed before, during, and after the worship service. After the worship service, members will continue the celebration with a luncheon. As a way of commemorating the occasion, members were able to purchase a wooden keepsake of the church. The front of the keepsake shows the outside of the church, and the back gives a brief explanation of the founding of Bern Church, which is listed below.
The Bern Evangelical Lutheran congregation was founded on May 13, 1836. On March 27, 1837, a “union” was formed between Bern Reformed UCC and Bern Lutheran, where they coexisted for over 150 years. In February 1996, the Lutheran congregation approved the purchase of 7.43 acres of land along West Leesport Road, Route 183, in the West Ridge Development, Leesport, PA. On July 31, 1997, the Reformed and Lutheran congregations signed the Articles of Dissolution, thus becoming independent. The ground-breaking ceremony was conducted on March 1, 1998, with construction taking eight months, allowing the congregation to move into the new facility by late October. The first worship service in the new church was held on Nov. 1, 1998. The Dedication Service for the new church was conducted on Nov. 22, 1998. We rejoice in the celebration of our 25th year anniversary.
Bern Lutheran Church welcomes the community to worship with them on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. A Sunday School and Catechetical class are held each Sunday. There are also musical performances and events held throughout the year.
