LWV Berks County Presents: Youth Homelessness in Berks County on BCTV

League of Women Voters of Berks County Presents: Youth Homelessness in Berks County on BCTV. The show will air live on Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. It can be streamed at www.bctv.org.

PA State Representative Mark Rozzi, Mary’s Shelter Director Christine Folk, and PA’s Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program Specialist Allyssa Kovich will be guests on the program.

Mark Rozzi.

Mark Rozzi was elected to serve as State Representative for the 126th Legislative District in November 2012. On Jan. 3, 2023, Rozzi was elected by his peers as Speaker of the House. Rozzi served as speaker for two months, where he scheduled three special elections, visited four cities on a statewide listening tour, held a special session for victims of childhood sexual abuse, and passed five bills that would reform Pennsylvania’s statute of limitations for those who endured childhood sexual abuse. Rozzi resigned as speaker on Feb. 28, 2023. His legacy lives in the House chamber through the adopted rules he drafted, which he wrote with the intention of improving the legislative process by minimizing instances of hyper-partisanship. The Berks County Legislator is a lifelong resident of the district. He graduated in 1989 from Muhlenberg High School. Rozzi went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Kutztown University with a concentration in pre-law and constitutional law. Rozzi resides in Muhlenberg Township, where he remains active in the community. His legislative priorities include education, property tax relief, improving the commonwealth’s aging infrastructure system, and safeguarding our children from predators.

Christine Folk.

Christine Folk is the Executive Director of Mary’s Shelter, a multi-faceted comprehensive housing and social service agency that addresses pregnancy, parenting, and youth homelessness through proactive preventative work, crisis intervention services, and stabilization back into the community. In 2018, Mary’s Shelter expanded services to include homeless, unaccompanied youth. Mary’s Shelter is licensed by the state of Pennsylvania to house minors in the shelter and transitional living programs. Chris’ journey with Mary’s Shelter began as a volunteer in 1994 and then as a board member in 1996. Her passion for helping young women led to a full-time Development position in 1997. She accepted the Executive Director position in 2000. Chris loves a challenge and is always looking for opportunities to improve and expand the programs and services.

Allyssa Kovich.
