Arts Market Celebrates Creators in Reading

Artists and the general public are invited to attend a one-of-a-kind arts market this weekend in downtown Reading.

Barrio Alegría is hosting its annual My Mother’s Refrigerator arts market on Saturday, Dec. 16, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at the WCR, at 140 N. 5th St., Reading. The event will feature 12 local artists selling their work for last-minute holiday shopping or just to bring life and vibrant color into your home.

The annual market highlights a dozen up-and-coming artists from around the city who specialize in visual arts, poetry, airbrushing, and even tattooing.

Anthony Orozco, director of operations for Barrio Alegría, said the market is a unique opportunity for shoppers and vendors alike.

“The whole concept around My Mother’s Refrigerator is to show the pride we have for artists who have recently entered the world of selling their pieces,” Orozco said. “Just like how your mom would proudly display your artwork in the centerpiece of the kitchen, we want to show off the best artists the city has to offer while also giving people a chance to actually purchase the art they love.”

The market is also a networking event for local artists who want to meet other like-minded creators. Artists are encouraged to visit the market and make connections with collaborators they may not even know of yet.

Ashley Hernandez, a painter who will be vending at the event, said she looks forward to showing others her work.

“I’m excited to perform speed painting and network with other artists,” Hernandez said. “I want to meet other creative people because they inspire me to be creative.”

The event will utilize the WCR’s historic auditorium for the market. No registration is required for shoppers and networking artists. Light refreshments and food will also be provided to attendees at no charge.
