Service Event Planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Jewish Federation of Reading, in partnership with Immanuel United Church of Christ, the Islamic Center of Reading, and Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom, announced a service event on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Families with young children and youth are invited to a National Day of Service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Volunteers will join hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country in volunteer service. The annual events honor Dr. King’s legacy and are an opportunity for Americans to renew their own personal vows of citizenship through service to others and engage in conversations to advance community goals.

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 99 S. Waverly St., Shillington, families with young children ages five and older will work on multiple service projects benefiting New Journey Community Outreach and Governor Mifflin School District. Participants will create food power packs for distribution for Governor Mifflin School District students, create hundreds of sandwiches for daily food distribution at New Journey Community Outreach, and create no-sew blankets.

Observed each year on the third Monday in January, MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. The theme for this year’s National Day of Service is “I will serve,” and we hope many children in our community will answer yes to that charge.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” In this time of rising antisemitism and hate throughout our country and world, we invite the community to come together to serve on Jan. 15.
