Buried deep within our website is the Reading United A.C. mission statement. It goes something like this: Reading United AC fosters a love for the game of soccer for all ages, abilities, and genders by enabling access to local soccer heroes, providing professional coaching, camps, and clinics, and developing environments and partnerships to further the passion for the game.
That’s quite an ambitious mission!
For most of Reading United’s history, we offered programs consistent with that mission. We ran youth camps, summer tournament teams, coaching sessions for RBJSL teams, high school clinics, and introduction to soccer programs for the little ones. These programs were open to any soccer player, regardless of whether they were on a travel club team or played on a recreational team. Unfortunately, the Covid years took us away from our mission. But now it’s time to get back on track.
So today, we announce our first partnership with a youth soccer club, Berks United FC. Reading United and Berks United have partnered to provide three programs, each of which is open to any player regardless of club or team affiliation.
First, we are bringing back Summer Select. Summer Select is a five-week program consisting of 10 training sessions and two tournaments. The teams will be coached by a Berks United Coach and assisted by a player from Reading United men’s USL2 team or women’s WPSL team. A tryout is scheduled for this Sunday! Second, Reading United and Berks United are providing summer camps. The camps run in June and July and include position specific camps, a goalkeeper camp, and a girl’s camp. Once again, the Reading United players will help coach these camps. Click here for more information.
Finally, Reading United and Berks United have put together a first for Berks County: a college ID clinic! With our combined club networks, we already have commitments from five men’s college coaches and five women’s college coaches. If you want to continue playing while in college, this is a great opportunity to be seen.
Although we may have gotten side-tracked, it’s good to remind ourselves why Reading United AC was formed. And while it is fun to watch our pre-professional men’s and women’s team play, we also want to get back to the level where it all starts – the youth, where we hope to develop environments and partnerships to further the passion for the game.
