Berks Community Health Center’s (BCHC) mission is to serve all Berks County residents with comprehensive, quality health care. With four fixed sites, a mobile unit, and a collaboration with Alvernia University to open The American House on Penn Street in late 2024/early 2025 as an additional site, BCHC evaluated their current clinical sites to ensure they are serving the community in the most efficient and accessible manner. That evaluation led to the decision to close their smallest location at Opportunity House on 2nd Street in Reading, effective March 28, 2024.

“This move makes a lot of sense as the American House is in close proximity to the 2nd Street location, and parking and access have been a challenge for our patients at 2nd Street,” said Mary Kargbo, BCHC President and CEO. “In addition, Opportunity House is seeking additional space to facilitate their continued growth, and this will aid them in making great use of the current BCHC space.”

The two organizations will continue to collaborate to ensure that Opportunity House clients have full access to BCHC’s services, including scheduling regular events for BCHC’s Wellness on Wheels mobile unit within the vicinity. “We are committed to increasing access to care in Berks County and will work with Opportunity House on assuring that happens for their clients,” continued Mrs. Kargbo.

“Although we will miss BCHC being co-located in our building, this provides us with much-needed space to expand our footprint,” said Modesto Flume, Opportunity House President. “We have a wonderful working relationship with BCHC, and that will not come to an end.”
