BCHC to Present Civitas Award

by Berks Community Health Center

Berks Community Health Center (BCHC) will honor Kevin Murphy, President of the Berks County Community Foundation (BCCF), with the health center’s Civitas Award at the fifth annual Picture Berks Healthy on Monday, March 25, 2024. Picture Berks Healthy is BCHC’s signature awareness and fundraising event. The event is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading. Light, healthy fare will be served.

Kevin Murphy joined the Community Foundation as its first employee in 1994. One of the highlights of Kevin’s career was when the Community Foundation started the conversation about providing primary care for the community. Using his previous experience in public health, Kevin questioned why there wasn’t a community health care center right here in Berks County. This helped begin conversations that ultimately led to the opening of Berks Community Health Center in 2012. As President of Berks County Community Foundation, Kevin supervises the business and operations of the foundation and serves on its board of directors. In June, the foundation will celebrate 30 years of promoting philanthropy and improving the quality of life for the residents of Berks County.

Picture Berks Healthy’s theme this year is Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers. BCHC’s mission is to improve access and health of our community through the delivery of coordinated comprehensive services for all residents of Berks County, regardless of their economic status. As we have worked towards this mission for the last 12 years, we have partnered with other organizations, building bridges to better serve the community together. We also continue to uncover and break the barriers that members of our community face in accessing the healthcare they need. At Picture Berks Healthy, BCHC will celebrate the bridges built and the barriers broken and cast a vision for continuing this work into the future!

The event will include a fun competition, as members of BCHC staff are creating display tables around different health and wellness topics. Attendees will get to vote for their favorite table, with the winning teamreceiving a small prize. Attendees will also get to view submissions in the second annual Picturing A Health Community Art Contest. Students in grades 1-4 from Tyson-Schoener Elementary, 16th and Haak Elementary, Millmont Elementary, 13th and Union Elementary, and Muhlenberg Elementary Center via the Muhlenberg Community Library participated in the contest. Two first-place winners are being selected – one from the grade 1-2 category and one from grade 3-4. These winners will be announced at the event.
