Spotlight on Innovation Corridor in Northeast Reading

Berks Alliance will host a community spotlight entitled “Introducing the Northeast Reading Innovation Corridor” on Tuesday, April 16, at 12 noon, via Zoom.

An area of northeast Reading named The Innovation Corridor is the focus of revitalization efforts led by Habitat for Humanity of Berks County and Albright College. The corridor connects Albright College and Albright College’s Total Experience Learning Center to the Reading School District’s planned science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) academy at North Ninth and Douglass streets. Housing in the connecting neighborhoods has been targeted by Habitat for rehabilitation.

The construction of the STEM academy at Ninth and Douglass streets and the development at Albright College are leading a revitalization of northeast Reading. The TExpL Center at Albright already works with the school district and its students. Habitat is working with Reading Muhlenberg CTC students to rehabilitate houses in the neighborhood. The TExpL Center is coordinating a group of Albright and Reading School District students, as well as people in the neighborhood, to paint murals in the neighborhood.

The TExpL, originally launched as the Science Research Institute, has already assisted several high school age students to develop patents based on their research work. Albright has plans to convert the Camp Building on its campus into a state-of-the-art Innovation and Design Center. The College recently opened a new residence hall at 12th and Exeter streets.

Learn more about the ambitions of Albright College, TExpL, and Habitat for Humanity for this neighborhood in the City of Reading.
