Penn State Extension will host a virtual workshop, “Kinship Family Forum: Branch Out with Thrive,” on Oct. 18. This program provides core information on communication, developmental milestones, and mental health, and then presents additional information via family scenarios. This event is being offered at no charge to participants.
Youths need their parent’s attention and support during adolescence more than ever. With so many changes and transitions during adolescence, this phase of life is exciting and anxious for youth and their parents. Branch Out is designed to support mothers and fathers in their parenting roles as they, in turn, nurture their children as they transition from childhood to adulthood.
Kinship care is a term used for individuals raising children by grandparents, other extended family members, and adults with whom they have a close family-like relationship, such as godparents and close family friends, because biological parents are unable to do so for whatever reason.
Who is this for?
Relatives or unrelated adults raising children because biological parents are unable to do so, including:
- Grandparents
- Godparents
- Extended family members
- Close family friends
What will you learn?
Branch Out will help you learn strategies to …
- Foster open and honest communication.
- Support your adolescent’s development and independence.
- Understand your adolescent’s point of view.
- Establish boundaries and guidelines.
- Cultivate positive relationships.
- Establish safety measures.
