Academic World Quest is an educational flagship program of the World Affairs Council of America that engages high school students in a team competition of knowledge about world affairs.
This year’s local competition, sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Greater Reading, will be held Tuesday, March 10, at Penn State Berks in the Beaver Community Center (gym), with a snow date of Thursday, March 12. There will be 16 teams from 11 high schools participating. Schools may send up to two team. Teams will arrive at 8:30 a.m. The competition begins at 9, with lunch at noon and the event finishing at 2 p.m.

Local teams vie to compete at the national competition in Washington, D.C. Teams are composed of four students in grades 9-12 with one alternate. Their advisors are faculty members who guide them in their studies of these areas. There are 10 categories with 10 questions per category that the teams answer as a group. The national office sends references for each category and all questions are taken from these references.
Oley Valley won first place last for the sixth year in a row, Twin Valley Green Team was second and Wilson was third. Oley Valley went on to place 5th at the national event, a significant accomplishment.
The first-place winner will go to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national competition. WAC of Greater Reading gives a stipend to help with the expenses of travel, accommodations and registration.
