“Let’s Talk”

“Let’s Talk”

October is “Let’s Talk Month,” and Berks Teens Matter is eager to help you start the conversations with our own “Let’s Talk” video series!

Begun more than 30 years ago, “Let’s Talk Month” is a national campaign focusing the importance of conversations about sex between young people and the adults they trust. From its inception in 2015, Berks Teens Matter has placed a strong emphasis on the important role of parents and other trusted adults in these conversations.

This is what inspired our “Let’s Talk” video series, which features our youth ambassadors talking with local trusted adults about their experiences and views on “the conversations.” Studies reveal that most kids prefer learning about sex from their parents, but many parents are uncomfortable with this particular responsibility. Surveys conducted by Berks Teens Matter over the last year confirm these studies, with 77% of local adults agreeing that parents think they ‘should’ have these conversations with their children, but are uncomfortable doing so.

The best way to get comfortable with the conversations is to start them! Embracing this important responsibility, parents can ensure their children are getting messages about their family and values – not just hearing messages from their peers and popular media.

With a goal of reducing teen pregnancy in Berks County by 40% by 2022, Berks Teens Matter is committed to supporting our youth to make healthy, responsible decisions about their sexual health as they mature. We can’t do that without the full participation of parents and trusted adults.
