Music – The Universal Language

Prospectus Berco was recently awarded two grants to pilot a music therapy program at their Adult Training Program located at 840 William Lane, Reading.  Wells Fargo Foundation approved a $2,000 grant for the music therapy program and the Outreach Committee of the Reading Musical Foundation will fund the program with a $1,000 grant.

The Wells Fargo Foundation welcomes grants year round from nonprofits and educational institutions in order to strengthen the communities in which they live and operate.  Unique in the country in its approach and breadth, the Reading Musical Foundation enriches the Berks County community through music education, advocacy, performance and appreciation.  The Foundation looks forward to the results from this outreach program which will work with adults with intellectual disabilities through music therapy.

Emily Frantz, MT-BC, will conduct the music therapy sessions starting in mid-July.  A self-employed music therapist, Ms. Frantz is a graduate of Temple University and an adjunct professor at Elizabethtown College.   She previously was employed at the Bethany Children’s Home for over 10 years as a music therapist.

A universal language, music touches and influences the lives of everyone.  Communication skills for many individuals with intellectual disabilities may be limited, and music provides an outlet for expression and contact with others.  Music has great appeal to many of the younger adults entering the program.

ABOUT PROSPECTUS BERCO

Prospectus Berco is a nonprofit agency in Berks County that is dedicated to inspiring people with disabilities or other special needs to lead meaningful lives by providing innovative services that promote dignity and respect.  Founded in 1977 and celebrating its 40th Anniversary, Prospectus Berco works with over 425 individuals and their families in Day and Residential Services Programs. Day Services includes a vocational workshop and job training and Adult Training classrooms.  Residential services include 23 community homes, LifeSharing, Family Support Services, and foster care placement.
