OppShop to Celebrate Earth Day by Hosting Donation Day to Benefit Homeless Families

by Opportunity House

OppShop will host an Earth Day Donation Day on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

OppShop, the retail thrift store operated by Opportunity House, is located at 3045 5th Street Highway in Muhlenberg Township. Donations will be accepted at the rear of its retail store. It’s fast and easy to drop off items, and the staff is on hand to help customers unload items from their vehicles.

Through its Reuse & Recycle Program, Opportunity House diverted 1,041,00 pounds of waste from the landfills in 2023. OppShop accepts donations of clothing, furniture, housewares, books, DVDs, and CDs at its Muhlenberg Township location. Donations of clothing are accepted at bins located throughout Berks County. The Reuse & Recycle Program employs formerly homeless clients to process donations at its warehouse in Reading.

Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose, and Help Reduce Homelessness

Clients at Opportunity House receive vouchers to shop for clothing when they arrive at the shelter. Men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and shoes are always needed. At the shelter, they work with their case managers to identify the items they need when they secure permanent housing. Many families are starting over and need everything to furnish their homes.

The Berks County community plays a pivotal role by repurposing, reusing, and recycling items they no longer need. In addition to diverting waste from landfills, donors appreciate knowing that their items stay in Berks County and help families in need in our community.

Purchasing with A Purpose

By purchasing pre-owned merchandise, shoppers can decrease their carbon footprint and generate funds to help support the programs and services at Opportunity House.

This year, Opportunity House celebrates its 40th anniversary of providing emergency shelter to people in need in our community. Over 500 clients each year, depend on Opportunity House to help them get back on their feet and return to stable housing.

Opportunity House is a Keystone 4-Star Early Childhood Learning Center with programs for newborns, preschool, and after-school programs. Over 125 families benefit from the program by providing quality daycare to low-income families, allowing parents to work, and providing economic stability for their families.
