WOW Promotes Literacy Through Fun Vocabulary Initiative

The Word of the Week (WOW) program was inaugurated at the Muhlenberg School District in 2010 and for the past eight years, the school district, local community and beyond have been involved in promoting literacy through what we have come to call the Word of the Week (WOW) vocabulary initiative.

The WOW initiative is comprised of the introduction and learning of a new robust vocabulary word every week over the course of the academic year. At present, we have introduced over 310 robust words to a multitude of enthusiastic bibliophiles.

WOWs are featured throughout the area in a number of ways as well. We always send the hard copies to all participants in advance with the display date printed on each WOW to make it quick and easy to present each week. Each WOW is always carefully selected to be timely and uplifting for all ages in our community and beyond. The WOWs are displayed throughout the 40 weeks of each academic year, from August to June.

It’s wonderful to have WEEU Radio and the local Reading Eagle newspaper work with us in debuting each of the 40 WOWs every Monday via the airwaves and print. Presently, we have over 100 organizations that display the WOW throughout Berks County and Beyond. We are truly honored to now share our WOWs with BCTV!  Look for a new word on air each week!
