Reading Jewish Film Series Continues With An Act of Defiance

Wyomissing, PA — The Jewish Federation of Reading announces the third film of the 2019 Reading Jewish Film Series: the Dutch political drama An Act of Defiance on Wednesday, January 9, at 7pm at Fox East, 4350 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading.  Tickets are $5.

In An Act of Defiance, a gutsy lawyer risks career and family to defend Nelson Mandela in this historical thriller set in South Africa’s Apartheid era.  Mandela & nine other defendants, including Jewish anti- Apartheid fighters, faced a possible death sentence after their arrest during a summer 1963 raid.  As their sympathetic white Afrikaner lawyer Bram Fischer fights to expose South Africa’s corrupt system, he attempts to hide his own ties to the resistance.  This riveting drama combines nail-biting political and courtroom intrigue to explore South Africa’s struggle against racism and the Jewish figures who sought to end entrenched discrimination in their country.

Three other films will be shown as part of the 2019 Reading Jewish Film Series. The Israeli romantic comedy And Then She Arrived will be shown on February 6, 2019.  Scandal in Ivansk, a Polish/Israeli documentary, about post-war life in Poland, will screen in March 6, 2019, followed by a discussion led by Dr. John Incledon of Albright College’s Holocaust Studies Program. The series concludes on April 10, 2019 with documentary Heading Home: The Tale of Team Israel, which follows Israel’s National Baseball team competing in the World Baseball Classic for the first time.

The Reading Jewish Film Series is co-sponsored by the Rubin Educational Fund of the Jewish Federation of Reading and Fox Theatres. All films will be shown on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm at Fox East, 4350 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading. Admission is $5 per film or $25 for the series of six films. Tickets can be purchased at Fox East beginning at 6:30 pm on the day of the screening, and series tickets can be bought at the Jewish Cultural Center, 1100 Berkshire Blvd. Suite 125, Wyomissing or by calling 610-921-0624.
