Reading Cares: Calling on community to help Earthquake victims in Puerto Rico

The Centro Hispano is leading an Emergency Care Package Drive for earthquake victims in Puerto Rico. Responding to the recent 6.4-magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks in Puerto Rico, the Centro Hispano along with the Reading School District, PALO Magazine, and RUMBA Reading will lead our Reading community response be collecting items for toiletry care packages beginning Wednesday January 15th through Thursday January 23.

To make sure donations get to the victims most in need Dr. Yamil Sanchez and Rosa Julia Parra, Board members of the Centro Hispano and Jose “Chamo King” Parra Andrade of Rumba Reading will be heading to Puerto Rico on our direct humanitarian effort to distribute the Care Packages to the families most in need on the island.

“We are once again coming to the aid of the families of the community of Greater Reading as another natural disaster strikes the island of Puerto Rico,” stated Mike Toledo, President of Centro Hispano. “As we did with Hurricane Maria, we are helping the extended families in Puerto Rico, as well as those that find themselves in Reading.”

With the recovery from Hurricane Maria in 2017 still ongoing, relief efforts have taken on even greater importance. Residents are in dire need of personal hygiene items as well as other necessities. We are asking the Greater Reading Community to support our efforts by donating travel size items for our care packages. Even the smallest donation will make an immediate impact!

The wish list items for the toiletry bags are:

First aid kits

Shampoo and conditioner

Toothpaste/tooth brushes

Baby wipes

Hand sanitizer

Saline Drops

Self-generated flashlights

Mouth Wash

Soap

Feminine supplies

Flashlights and batteries

Mosquito Repellent

Cough Drops/Medicine

Deodorant

Ensure and Pedialyte

Travel Tissues

Freezer Gallon size Bags Portable phone chargers

Only new items are being accepted, please.

We are also inviting volunteers to join us Saturday January 25 as we put the care packages together in what we are calling “Reading Cares Day” at the Centro Hispano.
