SHILLINGTON, PA – Two fifth grade students at Governor Mifflin Intermediate School, Jack Belinski and Joshua Wawrzonek, will be taking their robotics skills on the road this month to compete in a statewide robotics competition, the Eastern PA Championship Vex IQ Challenge.
The pair and their advisor, Mrs. Sara Eastman, were notified of their advancement to the state championship on Friday, February 10. The news comes after Governor Mifflin Intermediate School hosted its first-ever Vex Robotics Regional Tournament on Saturday, February 4. Belinski and Wawrzonek took second place overall and were ranked as the top team in the elementary division.
“I’m very proud of this team,” said Eastman, “They worked hard to make two specific components of their robot work consistently and that’s what helped them succeed at the regional tournament at Mifflin. The boys work very well together and think similarly about ways to improve their robot.”
The Eastern PA Championship Vex IQ Challenge will take place on Saturday, February 25 at Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center in Downingtown, PA. The pair will compete against fifteen 4th and 5th grade teams from across the state. 24 middle school teams, ranging from grades 6-8, will also compete in the tournament.
Vex Robotics is one of the fastest-growing educationally-based robotics companies providing STEM education, equipment, and robotics competitions for students worldwide.
Governor Mifflin Intermediate School has had a Vex Robotics team since the 2018-2019 school year and began competing in 2019. This will be the second time the team has advanced to states since its formation.
