Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club: New Mural Dedication

Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club (BMECC) proudly announces the dedication of their new wayfinding mural to welcome and orient visitors to BMECC. The ceremony for the community, students and volunteers is on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at 11:45am.

50 students from Albright College’s Total Experience Learning program participated in the mural, all from the Reading School District. Additionally, a combined total of 25 Albright students and adult volunteers participated as well.

The 3-panel mural depicts a view of the Blue Mountains where BMECC’s 200 acres are protected from development. It marks the property entry to the 34-acre Arboretum with access to 166 acres of walking and hiking trails—all is free and accessible to the public.

An interpretive center kiosk at the Arboretum depicts native plant gardens, mini rain gardens, tree identifiers, kestrel boxes, walking paths and hiking trails. The property abuts the 64.4-mile section of the Appalachian Trail that BMECC maintains.

The mural was created by muralist, artist and teacher Mike Miller of Total Experience Learning with the morning, afternoon and after-school spring-session students in the month of April. Prior to painting, Linda Enders, a BMECC Board Member and then Chairperson for the Rentschler Arboretum Committee, gave a talk to both the morning and afternoon students about the history of the BMECC, the Appalachian Trail and the Arboretum details.

Prep work was done at the site by BMECC members, and the installation was done over Memorial Day weekend. The mural project has educated so many students and community members about BMECC; learning more about and being aware of BMECC will hopefully encourage more people to visit and enjoy the site.

BMECC has been dedicated to the preservation of the Blue Mountain forests and the Appalachian Trail for 107 years. We have continued to preserve and protect the wilderness mountain top between the Lehigh and Susquehanna Rivers. In conjunction with the Rentschler Arboretum, our goal is to encourage the enjoyment of these unique natural lands in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and encourage a passionate appreciation for nature.
