Combining the study of computer science with the study of sociology and society, Albright College has launched a new major in CyberCrimes.
Students interested in combatting criminal use of evolving technology can now major in CyberCrimes at Albright College. The major combines two important areas of study: computer science and sociology.
Sociology is used to analyze and explain the most challenging issues of our time. Students will develop a foundation of sociological theory about the ways people interact in order to understand and assess a variety of human actions around the world.
While learning about the principles that future computer programs will be built on, students will use sociology skills to critically assess how people might take advantage of ever-changing computer hardware and software.
According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, information security analysts (who plan and carry out security measures to protect an organization’s computer networks and systems) is projected to grow 35% from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Peter Berger wrote that ‘The fascination of sociology lies in the fact that its perspective makes us see, in a new light, the very world in which we have lived all our lives,’” said Elizabeth Kiester, Ph.D., chair and associate professor of sociology. “We are excited to offer this opportunity to students with a passion for computers and a curiosity for understanding the way in which they are continually changing our lives, including the ways in which crimes are committed.”
