Call to Writers and Artists — I AM: Proud to Be…You and Me

“May you live in interesting times” is claimed to be a translation of a traditional Chinese curse. And we do live in interesting times —times of great cynicism and anxiety, uncertainty, and disappointment. It is in such times that it is important to find ways to preserve, protect, and further the courage, honesty, and integrity that bring us enduring pride.

Looking to moments from history or from the public arena today — moments involving others or ourselves that illustrate the best of humanity — helps us live the values we cherish. Stories can save us.

The “Call”: in poetry, prose, or art — share responses featuring people, events, or inspirations — from history or today’s news — deeply personal or widely known — that showcase moments of pride and how they have affected you.

Please consider sharing your story…trials, tribulations, inspirations, and the parts that others perhaps have played in your success.

Any kind of proud: Proud of who I am. Proud of who I’ve become. Proud of what I’ve survived or conquered. Proud of my family, my friends, my work, and my hobbies.

We all have reasons to be proud…we’re often shy about saying so, but at least once, let’s just celebrate who we ARE!

Your “story” can be told in bits and pieces. Or with lots of photos. But please include at least one photo to accompany your story. It can be a photo of you or someone else, a piece of art, or a meme you create.

Submissions — poetry, prose, or art — will be accepted by March 1, 2024. Please send a Word docx and/or a jpg 1 MB, @ 300 dpi, to [email protected]. There is no submission charge. Include a 2-3 sentence bio along with your submission. Bios may be edited.

Submissions will be shared on the digital news site The Boyertown Area Expression (boyertownareaexpression.town.news) throughout the summer of 2024 and at the opening of a fine art exhibit scheduled for June 28, 2024, from 5-7 p.m. at Studio B Art Gallery, 39A E Philadelphia Ave., Boyertown, PA.

Visit www.studiobbb.org and Studio B Art Gallery on Facebook for any updates about the project. Sign up with Jane Stahl ([email protected]) to receive Studio B’s monthly e-newsletter; subscribe to The Boyertown Area Expression to find submissions.

Project is supported by a grant from the Boyertown Area Charitable Program through Berks County Community Foundation.
