Being homeless in the summer isn’t easy. For our aging Vietnam Vets, the heat can be fatal for those with heart and lung conditions. For our Gulf War era Veterans, living in a car may feel safe, but with the lack of water, it can result in dehydration and heat stroke. Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran Veterans with asthma and other respiratory conditions know that air conditioning is vital to prevent a life-threatening asthma attack. The hazy, hot, humid days are brutal on Veterans and others who are living outdoors.
A Glimpse of Living Outdoors
Here are some tips to follow if you see a Veteran or others living outdoors.
- Do not approach the individual.
- Be respectful of the person’s space. This is where they live.
- Contact your local police department on a non-emergency line. Report the details of the location and description of the individual. They will deploy the appropriate resources.
- Respect the right of any homeless person and/or Veteran to decline services.
