Two first-year Albright College Global Scholar students will present their work on furthering Justice, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) for the 35th annual Association of Academic Programs in Latin America and the Caribbean conference held in Cali, Colombia.
“From Diversity to Full Participation: Global Scholars and Social Justice at Albright College” will be presented by students Jocelyn McLaughlin ’27 (molecular psychobiology) and Elicia Aponte ’27 (biology), alongside Adam John, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish.
The roundtable presentation examines the benefits of adding social justice components to the Global Scholars program and study abroad in general. Also contributing to the research were Global Scholar student Mariah Straubel ’27 (psychology) and faculty members Maria Escobar, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology, Brian Jennings, Ph.D., professor of sociology, and Lena Ziegler, Ph.D., lecturer of English.
In addition, faculty members David Osgood, Ph.D., professor of biology, and Kristen Woodward, M.F.A., professor of art, will also present a paper entitled “Cross-disciplinary Teaching and the Cultural Sustainability of Indigenous Boruca in Costa Rica” at the conference. The paper explores the curricular objectives, student products, and ethical questions surrounding the introduction of the Indigenous Costa Rican Boruca culture in an undergraduate seminar course. The content examines the ecological impact of tourism on the Boruca and their efforts to include visitors in their plan for cultural sustainability.
